The only thing
brighter than the sunshine at White Mountain Motorsports Park on
Saturday August 4 th, were the colors of the bright and boldly
painted racecars. Finally
Mother Nature gave everybody a break and there was no chance of a
cancellation that weekend. This
season has been tough on the tracks and tours as weekend after weekend
rain puts a halt on racing. Star
started their day off with warm up from12:00 to 3:30.
The evening events would give the Star Tour two heats and two
features. The first heat
race to hit the track, were the Sportsmen Division where rookie driver
Alec Gause from NH in the #75 Vega took the lead and was not about
giving it up. He battled off
Richard Eastman from Ma in the #0 Pinto and Skip Stearns from NH in the
#7X coupe. With Gause out
front Eastman and Stearns battled for second place lap after lap.
When the checkered flag came down it was on Gause to pick up the
first victory for the tour that evening.
Eastman in the #0 took a second and to top off the pack Stearns
with the 7X finished third. The
modifieds were lined up and ready to hit the track for their heat race.
Vito Colenario from Me in the #55 Vega shot out to take the lead.
James Allen from Ma in the #46 Monte Carlo followed Colenario
with a battle for first place. Danny
Ferland from NH in the #194 Pinto made his way to third place.
Colenario and Allen battled lap after lap for first place but
when the checkered was waved it was on Colenario in the #55 to take the
second victory for the tour for the evening.
Allen in the #46 finished off second and Ferland finished off the
pack with a third. Then it was
time for the feature races for Star.
First on the tap were the Sportsmen.
When the green flew it was Richard Eastman in the #0 to take the
lead. Rick MacDowell from Ma
in the #76 Camero passed Eastman on the outside to take over the lead.
Eastman kept a close second with Skip Stearns in the 7X now
falling into third position. Once
again Eastman and Stearns battled for second and third place. When the
checkered waived it was on Rick MacDowell in the #76 to take the third
victory for the tour that evening. Eastman
in the #0 took second with Stearns in the 7X taking third.
The modifieds were geared up and ready to hit the track for their
feature race. When the green
came down it was Ed Mulligan from RI in the #61 Pinto and James Allen
from Ma in the #46 to battle for the lead lap after lap.
Then Allen made his move to take over the lead but not for long
when Bobby Turner from Me in the #7 Pinto made his way on the outside
and to the front to take over the lead.
Meanwhile Danny Ferland from NH in the #194 made his way around
the #61 of Ed Mulligan to take over third spot.
Once again Allen and Ferland battling for second and third. When
the checked came down it was on Bobby Turner in the #7 to take the
victory for the modified feature. James
Allen in the #46 took a second and Danny Ferland in the #194 topped of
the field with a third. Sportsmen
winner Rick MacDowell and Modified winner Bobby Turner were brought out
together for a Victory lap. Side
by side Modified and Sportsmen drivers rode around the track with the
checkered flags. Speaking
about flagging Race Director Mary Lima was on the flag stand flagging
the features. She stated “I have been a Race Director for many years
but never got to flag the features for the tour from Green to
Checkered!!!! A special
thank you to White Mountains’ Flagman for working with me and for an
unforgettable evening.” Thanks go out to White Mountains Teri and Don
Avery and their staff for an unforgettable evening of racing. |
