22 CARS ON TAP FOR WHITE MOUNTAINS |
|
|
Bright sunshine and the roar of
motorcycles in the mountains set the stage for the Father's Day weekend events
at White Mountain Mortorsports Park. The color of the day was green as the
cautions were few and far between.
The
only thing brighter than the sunshine at White Mountain Motorsports Park on
Saturday June 19th, were the
colors of the bright and boldly painted
racecars. Finally Mother
Nature gave everybody a break and there was no chance of a cancellation that
weekend. This season has been
tough on the tracks and tours as weekend after weekend rain puts a halt on
racing. It was quite a weekend for
the Star group as racecar after racecar pulled in to fill the pits of White
Mountains Motorsports Park with 22 vintage racecars from all over the
Northeast. Race Director Mary Lima
stated, “ Every week there is a least 2 to 4 new cars coming on the tour and
more to come. Star’s car count
has been outstanding for 2010 season and with more new memberships coming in
each week I expect more cars will be showing up for the events.” Star
started their day off with warm up from12:00 to 2:30.
The evening events would give the Star Tour 2 - 15 lap features.
The first feature race to hit the track were the Sportsmen Division
were Joe Keefner from Ma in his #99, a 1975 AMC Gremlin took the lead on the
half way mark to take down the first checkered for the evening.
James Allen from Ma in his #44 1937 Chevy
coupe battled for second place with new driver Brian Robie from NH in
his #99 a 1976 Ford Pinto. Allen
showed the way to take the second spot from Robie but only by a half a car
length. The modifieds were lined
up and ready to go for their 15-lap feature.
Lap after lap tight together until Mike Camp from Ct in the #4 Pinto
broke loose to take the lead. On
the last few laps Camp had difficultly and was forced to pull into the pits.
Now it was a chase for the lead, who was going to cross the finish line
first? Out of nowhere came
Danny Ferland from NH in his #21 Ford Pinto to go to the high side and take
down the checkered for the modified division.
Behind Ferland were new drivers Dave Grassie from Ma in his #61
Ford Pinto and Kenneth Bamford
from RI in his #66 a 1936 Chevy coupe battling for second position, with
Grassie taking the checked first to take second position and to top off the
pack Bamford for a third. Sportsmen
winner Joe Keefner and Modified winner Danny Ferland were brought out together
for a Victory lap. Side by side
Modified and Sportsmen drivers rode around the track with the checkered flags.
Speaking about checkered flags Race Director Mary Lima was on the flag
stand flagging the tour on. She stated “ I have been a Race Director for
many years but never got to throw down the checked flag on the tour.
A special thank you to White Mountains’ Flagman for working with me
and for a unforgettable evening.” Thanks go out to White Mountains Teri and
Don Avery and their staff for an unforgettable evening of racing.
