NOSTALGIA NIGHT AT WATERFORD SPEEDBOWL

It was “Nostalgia Night” at the Waterford Speedbowl on July 27th.  The house was packed with fans and so were the pits with tours and Waterford regulars.  Senior Tour was on hand with 22 vintage race cars from all over New England to give the fans a touch of the “Good Old Days”.   STAR started their day with afternoon warm ups and then at 5:00 STAR staged on the midway to let the fans see the cars up close before the night racing began.  It funny how the vintage cars are like a magnet to the fans, as soon as they were staged the fans where there with questions and stories.  STAR is very big on the younger generation and you could see children piling into the cars to get their pictures taken.  Some of the STAR members had memorabilia displays of their cars on hand to share with the fans.  Thank you to the members who displayed their cars for the fans.  Sorry the midway was full and all cars could not get up on the midway, but it was good because there were fans and press in the pits talking to the STAR members there, so it made out good for all STAR members.

At race time it was the Sportsmen to hit the track first for their feature race.  Ron DaRos from CT with his #213 “Flathead Powered” sedan and Robert Harless from NY with his #8 sedan went cheek to cheek with DaRos showing the V8’s the flatheads still have the power to do the job…….. Alec Gause from NH in his #75 pinto and Rick MacDowell from Ma in his #76 Camero battle to who would take up third spot.  With only two laps to go, DaRos hammered down to take a lead on the pack and the first victory for the tour that evening.  Robert Harless in the #8 pulled in a second with topping off the pack with a third was Alec Gause with the #75.  DaRos was brought trackside for and out of car interview.  Now DaRos is known to the members as “THE FLATHEAD KING” if anyone can drive a flathead this gentleman can,  move over V8”s………….

The modifieds were staged and ready to take the asphalt for their feature race.  When the green came down it was Tom Beauregard from Ct in his #51 Pinto to shoot out to take the lead on the pack.  Darryl Dutch from RI in his #6 Pinto and Rich Mosher from Ct in his #17 coupe tailed 2nd and 3rd.   Now coming through the pack was veteran to Waterford Speedbowl for many years, Mark LaJeunesse from Ct in the #70 coupe.  Beauregard still had a good lead on the pack but not for long as LaJeunesse made his way on the outside to overcome Beauregard.   Now Dutch made his way around Beauregard to second, and James Allen from Ma in the #46 Monza tailed Dutch for a third.  Then Charlie Wilcox from Ct in his #19 Pinto made his way on the outside to slot into fourth.  Then on the last laps with LaJeunesse in the #70 with a good lead on the pack took down the second victory for the tour that evening.  Allen in the #46 made his way to take down a second with Wilcox in the #19 to top off the pack with a third.

STAR would like to thank Waterford Speedbowl and its’ complete staff for all their hospitality and a great night of racing.
