OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDAY |
|||
On the weekend of
July 14th you could see the Senior Tour Auto Racers touring to their
next stop. Weekend after
weekend you can see these vintage stock cars traveling on the highways
in the Northeast. This
weekend they headed north to Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine.
It was hot and steamy day. The day began with
warm ups and the evening would bring the tour 2 heats and two features.
The sportsmen were up first for their heat race.
Alan Zemla from Me in the #43 coupe shot out to take the lead
from the pack. Skip Stearns
from NH in the #7X and Alec Gause from NH in the #75 Vega trailed behind
Zemla, but from the back of the pack John Dipietro from Ma in the #7
coupe made his way around and to second position. When the checkered
came down it was on Zemla in the #43 to take the first victory for the
evening. Dipietro railed in
with a second and Stearns topped off the pack with a third.
The modifieds were then brought out for their heat race.
Darryl Dutch from RI in the #6 coupe and Bobby Turner from Me in
his #7 Pinto dominated the field. Charlie
Lima from Ma in the #10 Pinto and Vito Colentri from Me in the #55
batted for second and third place. Then
Turner made his move to the front and took the second victory for the
tour with Dutch pulling off a close second and Lima to top off the pack
with a third. It was victories for the Maine members tonight.
Home tracks we all know what that is all about! Then at feature time
the Sportsmen were on tap first. John
Dipietro in the #7 coupe and Alec Gause in the #75 locked in the pack
and it was off to racing. Lap
after lap Dipietro and Gause drove side by side.
Richard Eastman in the #0 was on their tail waiting for a move.
When the checkered flew it was on Alec Gause in the #75 to take
the third win for the tour. Dipietro
took a very close second and to top off the pack was Eastman with a
third. All three were
brought to trackside for an interview and awarded with trophies. The modifieds were
lined up and ready to hit the track.
When the green flew it was Charlie Lima from Ma in the #10 to
jump out to take the lead. Ed
Mulligan from RI in the #61 was right behind Lima.
Then Lima and Mulligan drove side by side inches apart until the
last lap when Mulligan pulled out to open up the pack giving Bobby
Turner in the #7 room enough to pulled up to third.
When the checkered came down it was on Mulligan to take the
last victory for the tour that evening.
Turner and Lima on the last lap changed positions with Turner
pulling off a second and Lima topped off the field with a third.
All three were brought to track side for an interview and awarded
with trophies Congratulations to
the feature winners both were rookies this year and did a great job.
Star would like to
thank Oxford Plains Speedway and their entire staff for a great night of
racing. |
