24 ON TAP FOR LEE USA SPEEDWAY

On Saturday June 12th Star rolled into Lee USA Speedway with 24 vintage stockcars to bring history racing back to Lee once more.  Cars rolled in from all over the New England states.  Star started their day with warm-ups in the afternoon to be followed by two heats and two features for the evening.   It was nice to see the members gathering together having fun and joking all day, something you would see back when these grand old cars ran at Lee USA Speedway.  The first heat was the Sportsmen division where I have to say put on quite a show!  Bumper to bumper side by side the Sportsmen made their way around the track giving the fans what it used to be like at the Lee USA Speedway back in the 60's and 70's.  On the half way mark Richard Eastman from Ma in his beautiful red #0 Pinto, originally driven by Ollie Silva worked his way to the front and led the Sportsmen by taking his first victory for the 2010 season.   Once again this grand old car takes a victory at Lee USA Speedway as it did so many times before when driven by the original driver Ollie Silva. Then the modified division rolled out onto the track for their heat race. The roar and sound of the engines echo as the modifieds showed the fans what racing was really like. Racing side by side the modifieds made their way around the track.  Jamie Feland from NH in his #194 Pinto shot to the lead to take the second victory for the evening and his first win with the Star Tour.  Then it was time for the Sportsmen to hit the track for their feature race and what a race it was as Sumner Scott in the #5 coupe originally driven by his dad David Scott who was in the pits looking on, took the little blue coupe to Victory Lane for his dad once more.  Richard Eastman in the #0 Pinto and Charles Grassie in the #99 Pinto battled side by side to see who would take second.  On the last lap as they made the forth turn Eastman came down the front stretch first to pick up the second spot and Robert Harless from NY in his #8 sedan took over the third spot from Grassie on the last turn to pick up third place for the evening.  Sumner Scott was brought to Victory Lane for an out of car interview and presented with the first place trophy for the sportsmen feature win.  Then the modifieds rolled out on the track for their feature.  Who was going to win?  It was any ones race that evening.  Side by side inches apart the modifieds raced hard and gave the fans quite a show that evening!  Bob Bateman from RI in his #17 Pinto, Charlie Lima from Ma in his #2X coupe and Bob Pringle from NH in the #84 Pinto raced hard lap after lap with the pack breathing down on them.  When the checkered flag came down it was Bob “Fox” Bateman in the #17 who took the victory.  Charlie Lima in the 2X and Bob Pringle in the #84 raced to a photo finish.   It was Lima taking second spot from Pringle only by a bumper to give third spot to Pringle.  Bob Bateman was taken to Victory Lane for an out of car interview and presented with a trophy for modified feature win that evening.  Then David Scott owner and original driver of the #5 1932 Ford coupe came trackside where Star presented him with an award for his life time dedication to the sport of auto racing. David has been racing with Star since the organization started in 1999.  David has driven the little blue #5 coupe all his life and now stricken with illness can no longer drive but this does not stop the Scott family as son Sumner Scott took his dad coupe to Victory Lane once more for him.

THANKS TO LEE USA SPEEDWAY FOR A GREAT NIGHT OF RACING !
