On August 15th Star rolled into Canaan Speedway for their third appearance for 2009 and the second stop for the “Double Header Weekend.” Star started their day with afternoon warm ups. Again Mother Nature was not going to spoil this weekend for the tour. Sunny and warm this was going to be another great night for racing. To start the evening events was the Star Sportsmen, as they rolled out onto the track for their 10-lap heat. It was nice to see David Scott, known as Scotty back with his so well known #5 blue coupe, originally driven by Scott. Scott has been under the weather and still was not able to race that evening but his son Sumner Scott was going to take over the wheel for his dad. Then it was off to racing for the Sportsmen. Lap after lap the leaders changed until just a few laps to go when Sumner Scott from NH slipped under the pack and brought the #5 blue coupe to victory for his dad. Then it was time for the roar of the Star’s modifieds for their 10-lap heat. It was just like back in the old days when the modifieds drove inches a part, lap after lap giving the fans a great taste of the good old days. When the dust settled it was Dewitt Davis from NH in his #211 sedan taking the victory lap for the Star modified heat win. Later in the evening Star was brought out for their 15 laps features. First hitting the track was the Sportsmen division being paced by Star member Ronnie Bodge in his beautiful restore sedan as the pace car. When the green flag came down, MacDowell in his #76 Pinto dominated the pack until Charlie Wilcox from CT in his #111 coupe passed MacDowell on the outside taking over the lead and taking his first victory with the Star group. Sumner Scott from NH in the #5 made his way through the pack picking up second place with Rick MacDowell topping off the field with a third. The top thee winners were brought to the start finish line for an out of car interview an presentations of trophies. Then it was time to bring out the Modifieds for their 15 lap feature. The crowd was in store for a surprise when announcer of Canaan Speedway George Powers showed the fans how these open wheel modifieds were started in the 60's and 70's. Powers stood in the middle of the track for a on track start. The crowd roared as Powers jumped and waved the flags as the modifieds doomed passed him on both sides. Charlie Lima from Ma in his #2X coupe and Danny Ferland from NH in his #21 Pinto battled back and forth for first place until Bob Pringle from Ct in the #84 Pinto passed on the outside to take the first place away from Lima and Ferland. When the flag dropped it was Pringle to take the victory. Charlie Lima in the 2X finished off second with Danny Ferland in the #21 taking third. The top three winners were brought to the start finish line to be interviewed and presented with trophies. Star would like to thank Canaan Speedway for a great season. Star has made three appearances at Canaan for the 2009 season and looking forward to returning next season. |
